A UT first-year student pitching jewelry that detects date rape drugs, as well as a student who has developed ergonomic equipment which helps weight lifters prevent wrist injuries, took home top honors — and $1,000 prizes — at The University of Tampa Sykes College of Business’ Lowth Entrepreneurship Center’s third annual New Venture Exposition last week.
At the event, graduate and undergraduate students in entrepreneurship, along with Spartan Accelerator and Incubator program participants, presented 62 business concepts.

In her young life, Sydney Bocik ’19 has already endured great loss, as her father passed away from cancer when she was just a little girl.
It is a fairly unique experience for someone so young, but instead of facing her grief alone, Bocik sought solace with others in her high school who’d also lost a close loved one.
“We realized we didn’t have to go through this kind of loss alone,” she said, explaining that together with a friend and the help of a school counselor, she started a kind of support group for fellow students. “We developed friendships that gave us the support when we needed it. It’s hard to have support from other people if they haven’t been through it, too. It’s such a unique loss at such a young age.”

Nino Lopez ’21 is a hockey fan with a drive for learning. So when he was offered an internship at the Tampa Bay Lightning for a position he thought he was underqualified for, he rose to the occasion.
“One of the greatest philosophies of the Lightning is that your technical skills don’t matter as much as your will to learn,” said Lopez, who has been an intern with the Lightning as a hockey analytics programmer since Fall 2018, where he performs a variety of functions from using a different programming language for a task to running a machine learning model or sometimes he’ll watch a hockey game and record stats.“The experience I am having at the Lightning has pushed me to be a better programmer and to critically analyze things better,” said Lopez.

The University of Tampa’s master’s degree program in physician assistant medicine was recently granted Accreditation-Provisional status by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program’s ability to meet the ARC-PA standards or when a program holding Accreditation-Provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class (cohort) of students.

As Jess Larson ’22 stepped into the warm tank of water, sting rays began brushing at her feet. With her hand full of fish, she dipped her hand below the surface, feeling the smooth underbellies of the rays as they grazed her palms. Larson smiled, feeling lucky to be doing what she had dreamed about as a kid.“My parents would take me to the aquarium when I was just a little girl,” said Larson. “Ever since then, I’ve dreamed of working in an aquarium and educating others about the sea creatures.”
