UT to Host Ethics Hot Seat March 30
On Wednesday, March 30, The University of Tampa will host an interactive discussion on Free Speech on Campus. The event, which is part of the Ethics Hot Seat Speaker Series hosted by the UT Center for Ethics, begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Plant Hall Music Room and is free and open to the public.On the hot seat will be Dan Verreault, UT associate professor of accounting and co-director of UT’s Center for Ethics, and guest speaker Catherine Sevcenko, director of litigation for the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE). Interactive participation will be facilitated through polling questions.
Sevcenko began her career as a Foreign Service Officer. Postings in Budapest, Munich and Moscow before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall gave her a deep appreciation for the power of free speech. She joined FIRE as a Robert H. Jackson Legal Fellow, and in October 2013, she took over the day-to-day management of what is now FIRE’s Stand Up for Speech Litigation Project.
The mission of FIRE is to defend and sustain individual rights at America’s colleges and universities. These rights include freedom of speech, legal equality, due process, religious liberty and sanctity of conscience — the essential qualities of individual liberty and dignity.
The UT Center for Ethics provides educational and professional resources to promote ethical systems and individual responsibility in the academic and greater business community through closer interaction with the University.
