Audition Requirements

Students desiring to major or minor in piano must successfully audition for acceptance into the Department of Music. Audition requirements for piano majors area are listed below. To be considered for a music scholarship, students must audition and be admitted to The University of Tampa by March 1.

Bachelor of Music in Performance/Bachelor of Music Education

Piano Emphasis

Choose three contrasting pieces from three of the following groups:

• A work from the Baroque period (for example, a prelude and fugue from the Well Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach or a sonata by D. Scarlatti).
• A movement from a classical sonata or concerto (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven).
• A 19th century piece (Schubert, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Chopin, Brahms, Schumann, etc.)
• An Impressionistic piece (Debussy or Ravel) or representative 20th century piece.

Bachelor of Arts in Music

Piano Emphasis

Choose two contrasting pieces from two of the following groups:

Bachelor of Arts in Music/Bachelor of Music Education

Organ Emphasis

• Students who wish to study organ as their primary instrument must audition with two pieces of contrasting styles. One of the works must be by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Know that if you qualify to enter as a piano major, you may audition for organ major status at the end of your freshman year, assuming you are studying organ for at least one-hour credit during your freshman year. Piano credit given during the freshman year will count toward your organ major status. It is encouraged that if you are an organ major, you continue studying piano for at least one credit hour through your sophomore year.

Performance Class

Students have the opportunity to study and perform works of the piano ensemble literature (piano duets and two-piano repertoire). In addition, accompanying assignments are included as part of the requirements for this class. Each student has the opportunity to work with a vocalist or instrumentalist and perform together on a student recital.

Harpsichord Lessons

Students may take harpsichord lessons as an elective and practice on a William Dowd (1975) instrument. Lessons are being taught by Grigorios Zamparas.

Pipe Organ on Campus

The 2.5 million tracker organ constructed by the Dobson Pipe Organ Builders of Lake City, Iowa, is located in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values.
