Tampa Bay’s flourishing media industry provides students with a wide range of opportunities to gain professional experience in multimedia production, journalism, advertising, public relations, social media, television, and other communication fields. Students can learn about the jobs of the future from innovative companies through hands-on internships, guest speakers, and field trips.
The Center for Public Speaking provides coaching and assistance to students seeking to enhance the quality of their individual or group presentations. Students are encouraged to visit during any stage of their preparation, ranging from brainstorming to final rehearsal. We also host an annual Speech Contest every Fall themed to various industries within the field of communication.
Students can learn leadership skills while earning credit by getting involved with student-run media. The Minaret newspaper is published weekly out of a bustling newsroom, WUTT radio has a podcast-ready studio and streams live, UTTV Spartan News uses smartphones and social media to report campus news, and The Spartan Agency provides a creative strategy for real clients.
Communication department faculty take students abroad every year for intense and immersive educational experiences. Some recent travel courses explored cross-cultural communication in Morocco, speech for business in Italy, co-creative documentary production in Mexico, and public media institutions in Cuba. For many students, these unique trips are life-changing.
