From March 23-April 4, The University of Tampa's Scarfone/Hartley Gallery will host an exhibition of the 2018 Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Award Recipients in partnership with UT's College of Arts and Letters, Hillsborough County Public Schools and the Hillsborough Education Foundation.
The gallery will stay open until 6 p.m. on Friday, March 23, as part of the Tampa Downtown Partnership's Fourth Friday event. An awards reception and ceremony honoring the students will be held at the gallery on Tuesday, March 27 (invitation only).
Presented by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, the 95th Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the country's longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative students in grades 7-12.
This year, nearly 350,000 works of art and writing were submitted to more than 100 affiliate partners across the country. Creative teens from Hillsborough County received regional honors from local affiliate Hillsborough County Public Schools, including Gold Keys, Silver Keys, Honorable Mentions or American Visions and Voices nominations.
UT's Scarfone/Hartley Gallery will display more than 300 works of art and writing representing all of the awards' 29 categories, including fashion, painting, flash fiction, poetry, printmaking, short film and more.
"We are thrilled to provide a platform to not only celebrate but showcase the creative visual and literary works of local Hillsborough County students," said Jocelyn Boigenzahn, gallery director.
Founded in 1923, the Scholastic and Writing Awards have fostered the creativity and talent of millions of students, including renowned alumni who have gone on to become leaders in their fields, including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Philip Pearlstein and Sylvia Plath. More recently, Stephen King, Richard Linklater, Zac Posen and Lena Dunham received Scholastic Art and Writing Awards as teenagers.
The gallery is located on campus at the R.K. Bailey Art Studios at 310 N. Blvd. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. There is no charge for admission.
