The University of Tampa’s Department of Information and Technology Management and the Tampa Bay Technology Leadership Association (TBTLA) will co-host GETSMART (Getting Everyone to Study Math and Related Technologies) on Saturday, April 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Sykes College of Business Room 134.
As the demand for talent in STEM fields continues to grow, increasing the aptitude of all students at all levels in these areas remains a top priority in Florida, according to Natasha Veltri, associate professor of information and technology management and GETSMART program director. GETSMART is a free program that aims to get more Tampa Bay area students excited about careers in math, science and technology by giving them the opportunity to meet professionals working in these fields and participate in hands-on activities.
The day will begin with a group ice-breaker to introduce students to the GETSMART volunteers and professionals who work in STEM-related fields in Tampa Bay. Then students will spend the rest of the day taking part in hands-on activities, such as designing a mobile application, taking apart a computer to see what’s inside, creating a Web page and learning about 3D printing for rapid prototyping. There will also be a drawing for raffle prizes.
GETSMART is open to fourth through 12th graders interested in learning more about careers in math, science and technology. The event is free, but space is limited and pre-registration is required.
