UT Students Win Regional Accounting Competition

Two teams of University of Tampa students placed first at the Beta Alpha Psi Southeast Regional Conference, held recently in Orlando. The teams will move on to compete at nationals in August in San Jose, Calif.

Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary organization for financial information students and professionals. Teresa Pergola, assistant professor of accounting, is the acting BAP advisor.

The team competed in two of the three best practices topics, in the areas of chapter sustainability and service learning. They topped teams from the University of South Florida, Louisiana State University, Elon University, University of North Carolina-Greensboro, the University of Central Florida and the University of Mississippi, among others. More than 300 students competed.

“UT’s chapter is relatively new but has been very successful on campus, in the community, and among other BAP chapters throughout the country,” Pergola said.

The UT teams included Andrew Argue, Patrick Campbell, Lisa Reale, Rob Mainelli, Stephanie Gorospe, Valerie Bryan, Jenna Scinta, Max McQuirter, Roman Cowan, Meridith Klein, Janell Garguilo and Jingming Ma.

Last August, a UT team took first place at the national Beta Alpha Psi Best Practice Competition in New York.

The regional competition was sponsored by Deloitte LLP.
