An aerial silks dance is just one of the highlights of The University of Tampa’s annual Spring Dance Concert scheduled for Feb. 21-23 at 8 p.m., with an additional matinee show at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23. All performances will be in UT’s Falk Theatre and are free and open to the public.
The Spring Dance Concert will feature choreography by UT faculty and guest artists performed by UT students. Dance styles include classical ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop and tap.
Highlights of this year’s production are the aerial silks dance choreographed by Susannah LeMarquand, UT assistant professor of dance; a ballet with a traditional pas de deux choreographed by Richard Ploch, director of Acanthus Ballet; a modern piece on the theme of bullying by Lauren Gilbert ’02; and a Broadway “spectacle” blending Broadway and jazz by Linda Lopez, UT adjunct professor of dance.
Other choreographers include UT dance faculty members Susan Taylor Lennon, Phyllis Gaines, Glynn Owens, Richard Ploch and Ya-Ju Lin. Guest choreographers include former Chicago Lyric Opera dancer Bill Philin Ploplis; former Southwestern Michigan dance program director Beth LaBaron-Root; and Broadway Dance Project alumna Jillian Michaels.
“The Spring Dance Concert is a feast for dance lovers, or even people just wanting a taste of dance,” said Lennon, UT professor of speech, theatre and dance. “We feature a broad range of dance styles and choreographers, and our students are from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, as well.”
