UT Soccer Player Drafted to Major League
When Ryan Maxwell first came to The University of Tampa, his goal was to
play for the men’s soccer team and eventually move on to the major
leagues. After three years as a standout soccer player, the goal was
finally realized Jan. 15.
Maxwell was selected in the first round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, signing on with the New England Revolution.
“I was extremely happy and grateful,” Maxwell said. “I did not expect it.”
A senior pursuing a degree in accounting, Maxwell played in 55 games over the course of three seasons at UT, tallying 16 goals and 13 assists. With a 3.35 GPA, in 2008 he was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American.
Maxwell was first told that he was being considered for the draft during the winter break between semesters at UT. He subsequently trained twice a day in preparation for the MLS scouting combine, which took place in Fort Lauderdale the week before the draft.
“When a lot of people I know were out enjoying the break, I was training and preparing for the combine,” Maxwell said. “I trained twice-a-day, early morning and evening, because I knew the combine was going to be challenging.”
A native of Clarendon, Jamaica, Maxwell is the first player in UT history to be drafted in the MLS SuperDraft as he represents the first class of eligible players under Spartan Head Coach Adrian Bush. He is also one of two Sunshine State Conference players to be chosen in the first round.
Maxwell said he hopes to become a regular member of the New England starting lineup. “Overall, I just want to do well and exceed all my goals with the team.”
