Ronald L. Vaughn, president of The University of Tampa, received the
2007 H.L. Culbreath Profile in Leadership Award from Leadership Tampa
Alumni at the Dec. 13 annual meeting of the Greater Tampa Chamber of
Commerce.
The H.L. Culbreath Profile in Leadership Award
recognizes leadership involvement in the civic, cultural, economic,
charitable, recreational or educational areas.
Jim Hackman,
corporate vice president of University Community Health and chairman of
the H.L. Culbreath Jr. Award, cited Vaughn’s success in transforming
The University of Tampa into a prestigious institution and his
community leadership as key aspects of his winning the award.
“Under Ron’s leadership, the University has enjoyed a period of growth and expansion unlike any in its history,” Hackman said.
Vaughn joined UT in 1984 as the coordinator of the Department of
Marketing and the holder of the Max H. Hollingsworth Endowed Chair of
American Enterprise. He later served as director of the MBA program,
dean of the College of Business and Graduate Studies, and co-chief
academic officer before becoming the president of the University in
January 1995.
Under his leadership, the University has seen
an annual budget expansion from $28 million to $125 million and the
completion of more than $200 million of campus construction.
He has served on numerous boards including the American Red Cross,
Performing Arts Center, the Gulf Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts, the
Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Aquarium and the Tampa
Downtown Partnership.
Previous winners of the H.L. Culbreath
Profile in Leadership Award have included Don Wallace, John Ramil,
Monsignor Laurence Higgins and John Sykes, as well as the initial
recipient, H.L. Culbreath Jr.
Vaughn was also recently awarded the Tampa Bay CEO of the Year award for community action by Tampa Bay CEO Magazine.
