UT Presents An Evening of Experimental Dance Nov. 9
The interplay of visual art, dance and music will be explored during An Evening of Experimental Dance on Friday, Nov. 9, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery at The University of Tampa.
During the performance, student dancers will create movement inspired by the art in the gallery, currently the UT Fine Arts Faculty exhibition. Susan Taylor Lennon, professor of speech, theatre and dance, who is organizing the event, said this will be a semi-interactive performance for the audience as they will have to move around the gallery to look at the art.
Lennon said some of the pieces to be performed were created for the Student Dance Happening in October, though the works will be reimagined with different dancers and music. She described how the choreography will change to incorporate dance shapes that specifically relate to the artwork behind and around the dancers as well as the music.
“We’re challenging the students to take an existing dance piece and rework it based on the music playing and the visuals around them,” Lennon said. “This performance is truly experimental as no one knows what the space is going to look like and what the music will be.”
