UT Newspaper Named Best in State for Second Straight Year
The Minaret
The Minaret, The University of Tampa's student newspaper, was
again named best college newspaper in the Florida College Press
Association’s (FCPA) 2008 Better Newspaper Contest.
Kelley Bumstead, a senior from Cape Cod, Mass., took first and third places for best sports story. The Minaret also won second place for best front page. A second and third place for best feature writing was awarded to UT seniors Cristobal Gomez, of Nassau, Bahamas, and Michelle Magner, of Wilton, Conn.
The awards were for the 2008 calendar year. Entries were judged by members of the Florida Press Association.
This was the second awards contest for the FCPA, which began in 2007 as a partnership between college and university newspapers in the state and the Florida Press Association. FCPA boasts 13 member newspapers that range from small private colleges to large public universities and include the University of Miami, University of North Florida, Stetson University, Eckerd College and Florida A&M University.

At the national Associated Collegiate Press awards in San Diego in February, The Minaret Online — www.theminaretonline.com — finished seventh in a national contest of university newspaper Web sites.
