UT Named The Safest Campus In Florida, And The 19th Safest Campus In The U.S.
The University of Tampa has been ranked as the safest college campus in Florida, and the 19th safest college campus in the U.S. The ranking was compiled by YourLocalSecurity.com in its fifth annual Safest College Campuses in America report.
YourLocalSecurity.com uses official data collected from the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety and Security and the FBI’s 2019 Uniform Crime Report. The data in this study comes from information between 2017-2019, and includes public, private or nonprofit institutions that have a minimum of 5,000 students and offer a two- or four-year degree. The study looked at campus violent crimes, property crimes and Hate + Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) per the greater population.
The report specifically mentioned UT’s LASER (Law Abiding Students Ever Ready) Team which helps students feel safe going to and from classes. “Students who prefer not to walk alone can call the escort service and have company — either walking or motorized — while traveling to their destination,” the report states.
The University of Tampa considers the safety of all University community members integral to its educational mission. Thirty-nine safety personnel provide 24/7 campus coverage.
Kevin Howell, director of Campus Safety, said the Campus Safety team is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for the entire campus community. “This ranking not only validates the hard work of the Campus Safety officers and staff, but also the UT community’s commitment to being alert to safety issues and reporting any suspicious activities,” he said.
