UT Hosts Conference on “Women Mobilizing for Change” Oct. 2-4
The University of Tampa will host the fourth annual conference of the Florida Consortium for Women’s and Gender Studies on Oct. 2-4. This interdisciplinary conference, titled “Women Mobilizing: Past, Present, Future,” will include topics such as women and the economy, gender and popular culture, and women and family policy. A session on women and health will touch on polycystic ovarian syndrome, women and heart disease and the role of ethnicity in eating disorders. The conference will feature several UT professors. Juliet Davis, UT associate professor of communication, will present “Fat Chance: One Woman’s Irreverent Quest for Knowledge about Her Ever-Expanding Body,” and Ronald Kuntze, UT associate professor of marketing, will present “Not so Desperate Housewives ... 1:30 p.m. — “Made in L.A.,” a documentary of the Los Angeles Latina garment workers strike for minimum wage, in John H. Sykes College of Business Room 237, followed by a discussion.
6 p.m. — Reception in the Macdonald-Kelce Library.
Saturday, Oct. 3
Noon — luncheon with guest speaker Sonia Pressman Fuentes, the first woman attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and co-founder of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and Federally Employed Women (FEW), Trustees Boardroom (Vaughn Center 9th Floor). RSVP by Sept. 29.
4:30 p.m. — Film: “Zora Neale Hurston: Jump at the Sun,” in Reeves Theater on the second floor of the Vaughn Center. Discussion will follow with special guest Kristy Andersen, producer and writer of the documentary, and Kathleen Ochshorn, UT professor of English, who served as adviser to the film.
7 p.m. — Susan Taylor Lennon, UT dance professor, will perform in a dance/storytelling event entitled, “Memory and Metaphor: How Telling Our Stories Can Heal Our Lives,” in Reeves Theater.
