UT Community to Honor King with Day of Service
As many take time away from work in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Day, roughly 100 UT students, faculty and staff members will be hitting
the streets for the 7th annual Day of Service.
The student volunteer organization P.E.A.C.E. (People Exploring Active Community Experiences) is organizing the Day of Service, which seeks to honor Dr. King by having participants give back to the community through one of several volunteer projects.
“We like to think of it as a day on for students, not a day off,” said Carrie Collins, P.E.A.C.E. coordinator. “It’s a great way to honor Dr. King. We hope that students enjoy the experience and take the time to think about him and all that he did.”
Volunteers will meet at 7:45 a.m. in Plant Hall’s Music Room, where they will watch a brief presentation about Dr. King, before heading to seven different locations to complete a variety of volunteer tasks.
Among the organizations participating in the Day of Service is Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful, which will have volunteers helping with a local neighborhood pond cleanup project. Elsewhere, volunteers at The Spring of Tampa Bay, Inc., a shelter for victims of domestic violence, will help sort through donations to the shelter. At Hudson Manor Assisted Living Facility, volunteers will serve lunch as well as visit with the facility’s patients
Other volunteer activities will take place at Lowry Park Zoo, Kid City, Cracker Country and Bakas Horses for Handicapped.
