UT Community Orchestra to Perform First Concert Oct. 16

The University of Tampa Orchestra will perform its first concert Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Falk Theatre. This new ensemble is comprised of UT students as well as musicians from the University and Tampa Bay community.

The orchestra currently has 57 members, including 25 UT students from various majors from music to nursing, psychology, English, writing and business. The orchestra is conducted by Kira Horel, new assistant professor of music and director of orchestral and string studies.

The performance will begin with a “behind the music” pre-concert discussion at 6:45 p.m. by Horel on the music being performed that evening. Accompanying her in the discussion will be Justin Justice, a junior violin major, and Jose Ortiz, a community clarinetist who is visually impaired. The orchestra will perform works by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Bizet and Dvorak.

“I’m thrilled for this concert,” said Horel. “The musicians have worked so hard in a short time. It’s great to see the camaraderie between the students and seasoned community musicians. This will be a celebratory concert with unforgettable melodies, dramatic moments, and of course exuberant folk-dance music.”

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Horel at khorel@ut.edu or (813) 257-3762.
