UT Appoints New College Dean
The University of Tampa has named Dr. Anne V. Gormly, psychology
professor and vice president and dean of faculties at Georgia College
& State University (GCSU), the new dean of the College of Social
Sciences, Mathematics, and Education.
As dean, Gormly will oversee the departments of criminology, education, government, history, sociology, mathematics and psychology.
At Georgia College, Gormly helped implement the university’s public liberal arts mission, resulting in GCSU becoming one of three destination institutions in Georgia. She also helped launch Georgia College’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and was a leader in the institution’s iPod initiative, which helps stimulate the innovative instructional use of iPods.
Janet McNew, UT’s provost and vice president for academic affairs, said the University is fortunate to have attracted “someone with her background and accomplishments to lead this new college.”
Prior to her post at GCSU, Gormly taught psychology for more than 25 years at The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College). There she also served as director of the Office of Academic Advising and acting vice president for Academic Affairs. She was also selected as an American Council on Education Fellow.
Gormly said she first became interested in The University of Tampa while studying best practices at private liberal arts colleges. Later, her daughter-in-law graduated from UT and she learned first hand about the quality education students receive.
“When I learned of the search for the new dean, I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this excellent institution,” Gormly said.
Dr. Steve Hekkanen, UT professor of psychology and chair of the search committee, said Gormly’s experience as provost at GC&SU, academic background and leadership style made her a perfect fit for UT.
“She’s the right person to lead the faculty in creating a vision for the College of Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Education,” Hekkanen said.
Gormly holds a doctorate and master's degree in psychology from the University of Illinois and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Rhode Island College.
Her teaching specialty is in the area of developmental psychology with a specialization in lifespan developmental psychology. In 1997 Gormly authored a textbook on lifespan human development, and has co-authored or contributed to three other books. She has also worked for 17 years as a therapist.
Gormly serves on the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the Central Savannah River Area.
She begins her post at UT on July 1.
