One is a film major who aspires to work in the world of TV and movies.
The other has a passion for public relations and has promoted and
marketed major events for the March of Dimes.
Together,
University of Tampa students Amy Bohrer and Nichole Ciotti will play a
small but important part in managing coverage of Super Bowl XLIII, as
the year’s biggest sporting event takes place in Tampa this week.
Bohrer
and Ciotti were both selected for a weeklong internship with NBC
Universal’s sports communications department, handling media requests
and assorted other tasks in preparation for the big game.
“It’s
an opportunity that never would have come up if the Super Bowl hadn’t
been in Tampa,” Ciotti said. “I think it’s going to be a whole
180-degrees from what I’ve done before, since it’s just one week of
work. It will be really intense for that week, and then it’s over.”
The
interns will work at NBC Sports headquarters at the Tampa Convention
Center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day leading up to the Super Bowl.
Their tasks will expose them to all facets of the media industry
including public relations, talent management and production.
A
junior majoring in advertising and public relations, Ciotti has interned
with a weight loss clinic in Tampa and the March of Dimes. At the
latter internship, she helped organize and market a major event at
Tampa’s St. Pete Times Forum, which featured Matt Bryant, a placekicker
for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Ciotti is also the vice president
of the UT chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association. It was
through those connections that she was able to land the NBC internship.
Handling the media and promotions side will be a change of pace for Bohrer, who has worked the production side of TV and film.
Nevertheless, she said, “with NBC, that’s about as good as you can get.”
“I
think I can get as much out of it as I could from a three-month
internship,” Bohrer said. “My main goal is to network with everybody
there. There will be a lot of people to meet.”
As a senior film
and media arts major, Bohrer has had several experiences in TV and film,
including an internship with a Los Angeles-based film company where she
worked on the development and production of TV reality shows.
Her
most eye-opening experience was an internship in the fall of 2008 with
the Tampa Bay Film Commission, she said. On the job, she helped scout
locations for filmmakers looking to film in the Tampa Bay area. She also
assisted in the process of granting permits to filmmakers to shoot in
the Tampa Bay area.
While much of the work they will do at NBC
is still unplanned, Bohrer and Ciotti said the Super Bowl experience
will be an invaluable resume-builder as they prepare for their
respective professional fields.
