Retired Army Major General to Speak Feb. 6 on Lessons Learned in Wartime to Stimulate Economy

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Michael Jones will visit The University of Tampa Wednesday, Feb. 6, to share his thoughts on how management techniques used in the military might benefit the country’s economic competitiveness in the global market.

Jones’ presentation, “Leveraging the ‘Long War’ Experience to Stimulate Economic Resurgence,” part of the TECO Center for Leadership Speaker Series, is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Sykes College of Business, Room 134. The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited.

Jones served for 34 years in the U.S. Army, with his last active duty assignment as chief of staff for U.S. Central Command in Tampa. Throughout his career, he held numerous key command and senior staff positions in the U.S. Army and in Joint commands. He deployed on two tours to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and also to Bosnia as part of the Implementation Force of Operation Joint Endeavor.

During his presentation, Jones will explore what the U.S. has learned about management and leadership of organizations through 11 years of war. He will touch on areas such as flattening organizations while maintaining supervision, accountability and synchronization; tools for collaborative, multi-echelon, simultaneous planning; metrics and scorecards for non-quantitative objectives; risk management and other areas that are useful in the commercial sector.

The TECO Center for Leadership Speaker Series is dedicated to bringing outstanding leaders from the private, government and nonprofit sectors to campus to discuss business topics and corporate strategies with students and members of the community.
