Music of Quincy Jones Focus of UT Jazz Ensemble Concert Nov. 17
For its fall concert, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 17, The University of Tampa Jazz Ensemble will highlight the musical arrangements of the great Quincy Jones. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. on the West Verandah of Plant Hall, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd., and is free and open to the public.
Probably best known for his stellar work producing Michael Jackson’s hit albums Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad, and the We Are the World project, Jones previously did the arrangements for major hits by Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and other artists. For this concert, the UT Jazz Ensemble will play three selections from the Sinatra repertoire and five selections from the Count Basie Orchestra.
Vocalist Sam Boatwright ’17 will join the ensemble for The Best is Yet to Come, I’ve Got You Under My Skin and Come Fly with Me, all Jones arrangements from the live album Sinatra at the Sands, which many Sinatra fans consider to be his finest. The Basie selections will include his hit versions of I Can’t Stop Loving You and I Left My Heart in San Francisco. The concert will also include several jazz/funk arrangements by other arrangers.
