Moffitt Cancer Center and the University of Tampa are collaborating to commercialize intellectual property.
Moffitt
researchers making discoveries have an ownership interest in the
commercialization process but often do not have the appropriate training
in the business arena. Delving into private capital markets requires a
solid business model. That’s where graduate students in UT’s
John H. Sykes College of Business come in.
As
part of the master’s in business administration curriculum, students
coached by professors in entrepreneurship and finance are currently
working with Moffitt’s faculty members to prepare formal business plans
for their start-up companies. In addition, Moffitt’s Office of
Technology Management and Commercialization will have UT Sykes’ MBA
student interns tasked with assisting in market research, competitive
intelligence and financial modeling for technologies reported to this
office. The students’ findings and analysis will be memorialized in
marketing materials.
“I am delighted that Moffitt has forged
this academic partnership with the prestigious University of Tampa
business school,” said
Dr. William Dalton, center
director and CEO of Moffitt. “This is a unique opportunity for these
MBA students to learn first-hand about Moffitt’s groundbreaking
discoveries and gain valuable hands-on experience in learning the
process of commercializing medical breakthroughs and ultimately getting
them to the patient.”
Moffitt researchers gain new insight into
the potential value of their discoveries beyond the bench and the
clinic; MBA candidates are exposed to cutting-edge cancer research and
biotechnology applications.
“It’s truly a win-win. We’re
focusing on the best strategy to provide value to Moffitt and offer a
richer learning experience for our students,” said
Frank Ghannadian, dean of the Sykes College of Business.
The
Sykes College of Business is one of the elite private schools in the
Southeast accredited at both the graduate and undergraduate levels by
The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
