James Gore Appointed Dean of UT's College of Natural and Health Sciences
Dr. James Gore, a professor in the Department of Environmental Science,
Policy and Geography at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg,
has been named by The University of Tampa as the dean of the College of
Natural and Health Sciences.
As dean, Gore will oversee the departments of biology, chemistry and physics, exercise science and sport studies and nursing.
Gore said he looks forward to working with UT’s bright and energetic faculty to create a quality educational experience for the students of The University of Tampa.
“In a very short period of time, I believe the College of Natural and Health Sciences can become an even more visible scholarly landmark at the University,” Gore said. “I am proud to be able to participate in that endeavor.”
Gore, until recently, also served as the graduate program director of USF St. Petersburg’s Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Geography, and previously served as the chair of the department and as interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He has also held faculty or research posts at Columbus State University, Troy State University, University of Tulsa, Tennessee Tech University, Austin Peay State University, University of Cape Town, South Africa (on a Fulbright research fellowship), and the Zoologisches Institut der Universitat, Karlsruhe, Germany.
From 1994-1996 he served as the director and senior scientist of the Environmental Protection Division of The Conservancy of Southwest Florida, and he is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the United Nations/UNESCO International Hydrology Program.
Gore, whose research expertise is in aquatic ecology, hydrology and conservation, has had nearly $4.5 million of funded research proposals and contracts since 1978.
Dr. Janet McNew, UT provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Gore “brings a great depth of experience from many university settings as he assumes leadership of this young college.”
Dr. Maria Warda, UT professor of nursing and chair of the search committee, said the committee was pleased with the outcome of the search, and is hopeful for the future vision of the College.
“We look forward to welcoming Dr. Gore to the UT campus," Warda said.
Gore received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Colorado and his master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Montana.
He will begin his post at UT on July 1.
