When performing, pianist Petronel Malan has been described as “formidable…dizzying…magical.” Malan, a multiple Grammy nominee and gold medalist of several international piano competitions, will perform at The University of Tampa on Saturday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m.
The concert, titled “Artistry of the Piano,” is part of the 2011-2012 Concert Artist Series in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values. The performance is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Doors will open 30 minutes before the concert.
Malan will perform music by Franz Joseph Haydn; Ignaz Friedman’s transcriptions of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig Van Beethoven; Sergei Rachmaninoff; Isaac Mikhnovsky’s transcriptions of works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky; and Franz Liszt.
Born in South Africa, Malan began lessons with her mother at age 4 and debuted with the Johannesburg Symphony at age 10. She then went on to win every major national competition before moving to the U.S. to continue her studies. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and graduate degrees from the University of North Texas.
Malan maintains a full performance schedule as a recitalist, orchestral soloist and chamber musician in major venues throughout the world. In 2000, she won a string of gold medals at international piano competitions throughout the U.S. Her debut album, “Transfigured Bach: Bach Transcriptions of Bartok, Lipatti & Friedman,” was nominated for the Best Instrumental Solo Album Grammy Award.
