Eighth Graders Learn to Play with DNA at UT
Three hundred rising eighth graders from Hillsborough County will have a
unique memento from their summer vacation — they’re isolating their DNA
and placing it in a pendant to hang from a necklace.
These academically talented students are also learning about crime labs, physics and art at The University of Tampa this week as part of the Hillsborough Scholars Summer Academy. The students participating in the program have all scored in the top 15 percent of standardized tests across the country. They will come to campus five days a week through Friday, June 19, taking three classes a day.
They will be putting their DNA in the pendants on Thursday, June 18, from 1-3 p.m. and again from 3-4:45 p.m. in Room 108 in the Science Wing of Plant Hall. The program will hold a showcase on Friday, June 19, at 1:30 p.m. on the ninth floor of the Vaughn Center.
