Ruth Chananie's main interest areas are gender, sexuality, inequalities, social movements and feminist theories.
Professional and Community Activities
Chananie's research activity centers on the sociology of gender and sport, and social movements. Her dissertation research compared legal briefs and opinions for and against interracial marriage with those for and against same-sex marriage, which she analyzed qualitatively using social movement framing theory. More recently, she published on the gendered experiences, embodiment and popular culture portrayals of female bodybuilders and women in flat-track roller derby.
Her community involvement focuses on LGBTQI+ social justice and advocacy, conference planning, anti-violence efforts and organizing for racial justice. Also, she serves in various positions and remains involved in the Mid-South Sociological Association.
