When Madeleine Varda ’17 came to UT, she was a music major with a focus on piano. It didn’t take long for her to realize that after spending a year with UT’s 3,184-pipe Dobson organ, the centerpiece of the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values, that she was having far more fun playing the organ. 

So Varda is capping her four years at UT with the first-ever, full-length student solo organ recital on Jan. 22, at 2 p.m., in partial fulfillment of her music degree.

Ryan Deitrich, a University of Tampa student, was recently accepted as one of 17 students nationwide to participate in the 2017 Future Founders Fellowship cohort.

The Future Founders Fellowship is a selective year-long cohort that accelerates the development of the top student entrepreneurs in the nation. Deitrich’s acceptance marks the second time a UT student has been selected for the program, with Matthew Sarli ’16 serving in the 2016 cohort. Fellows benefit from mentoring, entrepreneurship retreats, a peer community and volunteer opportunities through Future Founders programs.

The leaders of Port Tampa Bay, Manitowoc Foodservice and Times Publishing Co. are slated to speak at the next Business Network Symposium at The University of Tampa on Tuesday, Jan. 24. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins with a continental breakfast at 7:15 a.m. with the program running from 7:45–9 a.m. on the ninth floor of the Vaughn Center, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd.

Anyone who has ever studied a foreign language knows the struggle to retain vocabulary. But what if there was a simple tool that could help?

In her study, “Singing to Speak: an Examination of Adult L2 Learners and Vocabulary Learning Through Song,” Vanessa Rukholm, assistant professor of languages and linguistics, examined the effectiveness of song on the acquisition of Italian vocabulary among adult learners.

The study examined the performance of 66 participants on a vocabulary test both before and after listening to a song containing the terms.

Then consider signing up for The University of Tampa’s Modern Advances in Leadership Certificate Program, presented by the Sykes College of Business TECO Energy Center for Leadership. The program runs from Jan. 17–April 18 from 6–9 p.m. on select Tuesday evenings in the Sykes College of Business, Room 131.

The program is open to UT graduate students as well as beginning–mid-level professionals with three or more years of experience.
