Tino Martinez '11 to Receive Thurman Munson Award

Four-time New York Yankees World Series champion first baseman Tino Martinez ‘11 will receive the Thurman Munson Award from the AHRC New York City Foundation on Thursday, March 14, in New York City.

The award recognizes on-field excellence and community service and will be presented at an event that celebrates famous athletes, corporate leaders and individuals with developmental disabilities supported by AHRC NYC. Previous winners of the award, which has been given for 44 years, include sports greats Mohammad Ali, Yogi Berra and Arthur Ashe, according to reports.

Martinez joins two other athletes in being honored this year, Howard Johnson of the New York Mets and basketball’s Anne Gregory O’Connell.

Martinez played first base for The University of Tampa from 1986-1988. He was a three-time first-team all-Sunshine State Conference, all-South Region and All-America pick, in addition to being selected for the Academic All-America team. 

He was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award in 1988, which honors the top amateur baseball player in the nation. 

Martinez won an Olympic gold medal in 1988 as part of Team USA in Seoul, South Korea, and was named the most valuable player of the Baseball World Cup in Italy the same year.

Martinez was selected in the first round, 14th pick overall, of the 1988 draft by the Seattle Mariners. He helped the New York Yankees win the World Series in 1996 and 1998-2000. 

Thurman Munson was a catcher for the New York Yankees. He was killed in a plane crash at the height of his career in 1979. The AHRC New York City Foundation supports programs for children and adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities and who live in New York City.
