Auditions
To help guarantee success and fulfillment within the students’ academic career, auditions are required for accurate placement. The standards within the program are high and require talent and skill. Auditions result in the placement of students on tracks relative to that skill and challenging enough for growth.

The Bachelor of Arts degree is a general degree with less focus on performance.

Audition Requirements:
B.A. Degree: Major/Minor scales

  • Two contrasting selections from standard repertoire of your choice (one can be an etude)

The Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education degrees are much more performance-oriented. Bachelor of Arts graduates go on to perform as individuals or for professional orchestras. As music education graduates, they begin educating others. The view of the music department is that educators need to be just as good performers in order to foster the next generation of musicians.

Audition Requirements:

B.M. and B.M.E. Degrees: 3-octave Major/Minor scales

  • One movement from solo Bach sonatas or partitas first movement of standard concerto (including cadenza)

Complete the audition form.

For further questions contact Dr. Libor Ondras, director of the orchestral program, at (813) 257-3762 or londras@ut.edu.

Orchestra
This studio/performance-oriented course is made up of a large ensemble of strings, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. The orchestra performs two or three times each semester, both on and off campus, and regularly accompanies professional players during guest solo appearances. The repertoire consists of major works, overtures, historical, contemporary and popular literature for orchestra. Chair placement auditions are held at the beginning of the fall and spring terms. (MUS 289 Orchestra offered in fall and spring semesters.)

Preparatory Programs
These programs are designed for high school students who are interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music Education degree. For students whose high schools provide an orchestra program, UT’s preparatory programs offer further enrichment with the chance to play along other strong performers. For those without a local program, UT’s preparatory programs offer the orchestra experience. In both cases, students are given the opportunity to sample the UT Music Department, staying on campus and working with UT faculty.

Studio Lessons
Private lessons give students a one-on-one opportunity to work on technique, on solo repertoire and to perform as soloists in student recitals. Studio lessons are open to anyone interested as long as they are enrolled in at least one departmental music ensemble on campus, such as orchestra, band or choir.

Studio lessons(247-268 Studio lessons) are offered weekly for 30 minutes (one credit hour) or 50 minutes (two credit hours) and require the co-requisite MUS 269 Recital/Concert Attendance.

Studio lessons may be repeated for credit. All instruments may be studied for one or two credit hours, with the exception of organ, which may be taken for two credit hours only. Music majors usually study for two credit hours. (Offered in fall and spring semesters)
