The Strengths Initiative
The University of Tampa is committed not only to creating successful students, but to ensuring that this success extends out of the classroom, following our graduates into the real world. With that in mind Student Transition and Persistence has launched The University of Tampa Strengths® Initiative. A Strengths-based approach focuses on what one does right instead of what one does wrong. We believe that this Strengths-based approach leads to higher levels of student engagement, increased self-awareness, and a better understanding of how to interact with others.
By infusing this Strengths focus on our campus we seek to improve retention, graduation rates and the success of our alumni. By building their talents into strengths we want to help students succeed in the areas of:
- Academics
- Leadership
- Relationships
- Engagement
- and Careers
This “Strengths@UT” page is designed to help The University of Tampa’s students, staff, faculty, parents and guests learn more about the Strengths initiative here on campus, and to provide resources to help you obtain and understand your Top Five Talent Themes and how you can positively develop them to maximize your potential.
The StrengthsFinder© Assessment was rolled out to incoming freshmen and selected student leader groups in Fall 2012 with a completion rate of more than 1,300 students. In Fall 2013, the assessment was again rolled out to incoming freshmen and selected student leader groups, as well as the transfer students who were enrolled in GTW 103. In Fall 2014, the assessment was again completed by incoming freshmen, who also participated in workshops during orientation and during GTW 101 and GTW 102. More than 5,000 students, faculty and staff at UT completed the Strengths assessment in the first three years. Currently the assessment is offered to all incoming students in the Success Scholars Program and to various targeted groups at the request of faculty and staff who believe that Strengths is a valuable tool for their students. This assessment helps students identify their top 5 natural talents, which can then be utilized to provide guidance and support.
By strategically working with campus stakeholders to more fully integrate StrengthsQuest into The University of Tampa’s culture, Student Transition and Persistence hopes developing a “Strengths Culture” on campus will:
- Increase students self-awareness, confidence, and psychological well-being;
- Provide students with a common language and experience that will help normalize help-seeking behaviors;
- Help students engage in meaningful relationships with diverse others on campus including their peers, staff and faculty;
- Provide students with the experiential opportunities necessary to help them turn their talents into strengths so they can be leveraged for academic, career and personal success;
- Encourage students to apply this knowledge to help them successfully navigate their academic pursuits – including choosing a major, selecting classes, working productively in teams, using the most effective study techniques, etc.;
- Ultimately lead students to have increased academic success, campus engagement and a greater chance of persistence and graduation.

Turning Talents Into Strengths
Now that you have taken the assessment you know your Top 5 talents, but your journey doesn’t end there. Now you have to take those talents and turn them into true strengths. Gallup defines Strengths as “the ability to consistently provide near-perfect positive performance.” Turning talents into strengths takes some work on your part. Consider the following graphic on the right. By investing time and energy on each talent you begin to develop them into true strengths. Think of it this way; you can be naturally athletic, but unless you practice you will never be a great basketball player. The same is true with each of your talents. You may naturally consider others feelings, but unless you learn how to productively apply it… empathy may not do you, or those around you, much good.
Throughout the academic year, workshops will be offered which can help you understand how to leverage your Strengths in various aspects of your life:
- Classes
- Roommate Relationships
- Social Settings
- Leadership
- Workplace and Careers
- Wellness

I did not receive results because of too many neutral responses. What does this mean?
According to Strengthsquest.com, “Neutral responses are not counted in the scoring of your results. The purpose of the Clifton StrengthsFinder is to help you begin to discover your most dominant talents by identifying the areas, or "themes," in which they lie. It does so by presenting you with a situation in which you are forced to select between two options that are different, but not necessarily opposite. Obviously, if you can't make a selection because you feel that neither choice applies to you, your neutral response will not count in the final scoring process. Less obviously, if you can't make a selection because you feel that both choices apply to you, your neutral response will still not count in the final scoring process. This is because sometimes the most revealing choices are between two positives. If both statements apply to you equally, then this pair of statements probably is not tapping into one of your most dominant themes.”
I was interrupted while taking the assessment. What do I do?
If you are interrupted while taking the Clifton StrengthsFinder, you do not need to start over. If necessary, simply sign in again, and the assessment will automatically resume where you left off. If you are still signed in, click the Continue button to return to the paired statements you were considering before you were interrupted. Keep in mind that the best results are obtained when the entire survey is taken in one sitting, which requires approximately 30-40 minutes for the average person. For this reason, please allow enough time to take the entire survey without interruption.
