Tampa Writing Scholars

The Department of English and Writing offers several annual scholarships to exceptional incoming students who wish to join our literary community. This select group of individuals is chosen based on demonstrated talent and potential for achievement in English or writing. Tampa Writing Scholars may be awarded up to $6,000 per year, renewable for the duration of the student’s studies at UT. Students may also be eligible to receive additional merit or need-based financial aid.

Qualifications:

  • New entering student (fall term entry only)
  • Demonstrate exceptional potential for achievement in English or writing
  • Major in English or writing
  • Students should also join the staff of a UT student publication upon arrival

Please Submit

  • 10-15 pages of creative and/or critical writing (poetry, short fiction, nonfiction, literary analysis or a combination of forms
  • 300- to 500-word personal statement emphasizing the role of literature and/or writing in your life

Deadline for scholarship consideration: March 1

Merwin, as well as authors Tim O'Brien, Colson Whitehead, Jamaica Kincaid, Jane Hamilton, Stephen Dunn and others.
