The data science major at The University of Tampa, housed in the Department of Mathematics, combines a curriculum of mathematics, statistics and computer science to provide students with a solid foundation in areas such as mathematical modeling, predictive analytics and in programming languages R and Python.
UT’s data science major will prepare students for a career in the field by teaching them how to manage “big data,” which are large, complex sets of data that traditional data processing software can’t handle. Data science majors will learn how to acquire, analyze and present big data in creative ways that will help businesses make more informed decisions.
Topics of Study
- Mathematical Modeling
- Predictive Analytics
- Programming in R and Python
- Data Cleaning and Manipulation
- Data Structures and Algorithmic Analysis
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- Applied Regression Analysis
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts growth of 28% in the data science field through 2026, resulting in more than 50,000 new jobs. Graduates are equipped to enter the workforce in a variety of roles, such as data analysts, data engineers, statisticians, machine learning engineers and more. Located in the heart of downtown Tampa, data science majors at The University of Tampa will have close access to a wide range of internship and job opportunities, from tech, finance and healthcare to government agencies and beyond.
UT’s data science program is led by Leslie Jones, Ph.D., professor of mathematics. For questions about this program, Jones can be reached at email@example.com or (813) 257-3578.
