What is a Virtual Interview?

A virtual interview is an interview that takes place remotely. Most commonly in the form of video conferencing like Zoom or Teams. Virtual interviews are often conducted much the same way as face-to-face interviews. The employer will provide details on how to access the virtual interview in advance.

Virtual interviewing is convenient for employers, resulting in a more efficient interview process. They can also mitigate schedule conflicts, save money, and expand the candidate pool.

Tips to Set Yourself Up for a Successful Virtual Interview

Logistics

  • Confirm the date and time of your interview (Note the time zone!)
  • Will the interview be live or pre-recorded? (The employer should provide this information.)

Technology

  • Test the technology BEFORE your interview. Verify your webcam, microphone, audio/speaker, and that your tablet/PC have the appropriate software downloaded to operate the employer’s chosen virtual interview platform.
  • Make sure you have access to reliable internet. You want to focus on nailing the interview questions, not worrying about spotty internet.

Limit Distractions

  • Identify a location that is well lit, free of distractions and professional.
  • If you live with roommates, have a barking dog, or are in a public space with background noise, you may want to find an alternative location for your virtual interview. The Office of Career Services has interview rooms that you can reserve by calling our front desk at (813) 253-6236.
  • A benefit to virtual interviews is that you can have your notes, job description, resume, etc. in front of you. However, you still want to adequately prepare so that you do not rely on your notes and maintain eye contact with the camera.

Treat Your Virtual Interview the Same as an In-Person Interview

  • Wear professional business attire (not just from the waist up, rather from head to toe). Doing so not only projects a professional image, but it also communicates enthusiasm about the position.
  • Looking interview-ready can make you feel more prepared and confident.
  • Conduct adequate company research and study the position description. This can help you provide interview examples that align directly with the company’s goals and position to which you are interviewing.
  • Prepare thoughtful questions to ask your interviewer(s) in advance and have them in front of you for reference.

Practice and Be Yourself

  • Be your authentic self! Everyone being interviewed is qualified. Focus on showcasing your unique qualifications, personality, and positivity to stand out from other candidates.
  • Maintain good posture and don’t forget to smile!
  • Schedule a mock interview with the Office of Career Services and/or utilize your Quinncia chiclet on your MyUTampa. Quinncia is an AI interviewing platform.

Follow Up

  • Send a ‘Thank You’ email within 24 hours of your interview. Send an email to each person that interviewed you.
  • Thank them for their time and consideration and reiterate some of your key qualifications along with your strong interest in the position.
