Using Handshake to look for Experience

Use Handshake to look for internships and part-time/full-time work. We vet thousands of employers from all over the US, along with the various types of positions on our Handshake website. This portal also serves as a communication tool for us, so be sure to check your UT emails to get updates about events you may be interested in attending.

Be sure to make your Handshake profile public to allow employers view your profile and contact you with opportunities for which they think you’ll be a good fit.

Read the below steps to make sure you take advantage of all that Handshake offers.

  1. Visit and sign in to your account.
  2. Using the top toolbar, hover over “My Account,” click on “Profile” and make sure to update it completely. Once you’ve completed that, be sure to upload a critiqued resume to the “document” section (also under ‘My Account’).
    To get your resume critiqued, come in for drop-in hours or make an appointment with a career coach.
  3. Using the top toolbar, click on Jobs”---> then "Employers" if you don’t find a position of interest. Then, type in an organization name or click on “advanced search,” choosing a state/industry.
    1. From there, click on a company, and scroll down to view the “Contacts.” You may professionally email the contacts in a network. You never know what opportunities may come of that.
  4. Using the top toolbar, click on “Jobs to find available positions. From there, you may also click on “advanced search” in order to narrow your search. *Upload your revised resume on Handsahke so employers can contact you for opportunities.
  5. Using the top toolbar, click on “Events” and register to attend helpful workshops/events/career fairs (free for students/alums).
