Your Path in Public Policy

This degree prepares students for rigorous graduate coursework and exciting careers in public and private organizations as well as government. Particular attention is given to developing students’ critical thinking, research and communication skills so they can effectively participate in developing, interpreting and evaluating public policy.

Public policy majors are required to complete seven core courses designed to introduce students to the actors and institutions involved in making public policy as well as the theories and approaches used to understand how these groups work together and make decisions. As part of the major core, students connect theory with practice through an internship and a course that allows them to reflect on their experience with classmates and connect it to their academic work. Students complete the major with a capstone experience that enables them to develop and carry out an independent project.

The multidisciplinary nature of public policy is reflected in the wide range of electives available, with options in biology, communications, cybersecurity, data science, economics, environmental studies, geography, history, health science, marine science and political science. Students have the opportunity to tailor their coursework to their interests and goals in consultation with their faculty advisor.
