James Welch's publications and research have examined business strategy, corporate social responsibility, transformational leadership and legal issues in management. He has published in various business journals and law reviews including The Journal of Business Strategy, The Journal of Business Ethics Education, The Journal of Higher Education, Skills and Work-Based Learning, The Journal of Values-Based Leadership, The Atlantic Law Journal and The Southern Law Journal. He has presented at a variety of business law, management and leadership conferences in North America, South America, Europe and the Middle East.
Prior to his move into higher education, Welch worked in nonprofit management and in the military. He served in the U.S. Army (reserve and active duty) for 30 years, retiring in 2021 as a chaplain (colonel) with the U.S. Army Chief of Chaplains Office where he served as strategic planner for future operations and reserve advisor to the chief of policy and governmental affairs. He has served as a Presbyterian minister in Kentucky, North Carolina and Florida, and on numerous local, regional and national nonprofit boards and committees including as a member of the Class of 2020, Leadership Tampa Bay. He is a member of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, the European Group for Organizational Studies, the Academy of International Business and the International Leadership Association. He is also a licensed Real Estate Broker.
