Practical Strategic Assessment
Born Global: International Entrepreneurship and Strategy
Sarthak Singh studies how knowledge and innovation move across borders within multinational corporations. Grounded in the knowledge-based view of the firm, his work examines how national and cultural differences, executive decision-making, external governance mechanisms and firms' aspirations shape where organizations find new knowledge and how that knowledge is transferred; a second stream examines multinational teams and organizational climate and their effects on employee outcomes.
Singh's work sits at the intersection of strategic management and international business. His dissertation, Two Essays on Firm Innovation: Uncovering the Roles of Cultural Distance, Speed of Knowledge Transfer, and the Big Four Auditors' Characteristics on Firm Innovation, uses patent citation data to examine the conditions under which knowledge sourced abroad becomes valuable at headquarters; that work was featured in the Lubar College of Business newsletter at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2025. His research has appeared in the Journal of Knowledge Management, the Journal of Intellectual Capital, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal, the Organization Management Journal, among others and he has presented his research at the annual meetings of the Academy of Management, the Southern Management Association, the Midwest Academy of Management and the Academy of International Business.
Singh came to research from industry, having worked in renewable energy sector in India on domestic/international financing with multilateral institutions and global commercial banks and on cross-border acquisitions. He brings that experience into the classroom through a framework of purpose, practice and preparation: a class culture built on trust and empathy, live projects and business simulations that put students in decision-making roles, and student-led case discussion that includes the critical and ethical use of AI tools. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Knowledge Management, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, the Journal of Strategy and Management, among others. He also reviews for the strategy, technology and innovation management and international management divisions of the major management conferences and has mentored incoming international students and served on a doctoral student advisory committee.
