Professor Perkins began his academic tenure at the University of Tampa in 2007, where he has served as the chair of both the Department of Communication and the Department of Film, Animation, and New Media. Throughout his teaching career, he has also contributed to the University of Wisconsin – Madison, teaching a range of subjects including art and technology, contemporary art history, and video production. Additionally, he has held a guest faculty position at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the graduate school of Painting and Drawing.
He is a recognized pioneer in Virtual Production, having published significant work on its pedagogy in the ACM/SIGGRAPH journal. His teaching portfolio extends to film scoring and music production, underpinned by his active involvement in the film and media industry.
Professor Perkins' professional work has garnered national and international recognition through exhibitions and awards. His films have been featured at numerous festivals including the Chicago Underground Film Festival, Dallas Film Festival, and the Santa Fe International Film Festival, among others. He has also had major museum exhibitions at The North Carolina Museum of Art and the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Art.
In addition to his creative pursuits, Professor Perkins is actively involved in community service having founded the Tampa Animation Festival and having served as the Chair of the board of directors of Jobsite Theatre. He is also a longstanding member of the executive board of Film Tampa Bay.
His current research investigates how new technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, effect the creation of fictional narratives in film, visual arts, and broader cultural contexts. Additionally, his projects investigate how fiction can influence the construction of cultural and social narratives within both real and virtual environments.
His work has received accolades at several prestigious film festivals including the Berlin Indie Film Festival, the Dumbo Film Festival, and the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation and Technology.
