Philip A. Obado’s scholarly and professional interests focus on wind band conducting, instrumental music education and the preparation of future music educators through conducting pedagogy, curriculum development and field-based learning experiences. His academic and professional work emphasizes the connection between collegiate music teacher preparation and effective K-12 instructional practice.

Obado maintains an active leadership role within the music education profession through honor band conducting, clinician engagements, composer commissioning projects and service to school and university music programs. His contributions support the advancement of wind band literature, music educator development and collaborative partnerships between higher education institutions and public schools.

Honors and Awards

Philip A. Obado has led ensembles selected for performance at several of the nation’s most prestigious events, including the 76th Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic (2022), the NAfME National Conference (2019), and the 137th Tournament of Roses Parade (2026). Under his leadership, ensembles have consistently earned UIL Sweepstakes awards, Medals of Distinction, Mark of Excellence Awards, and superior ratings at state and regional concert, marching and jazz assessments.
