Career Specialties

Kim explores the relationships between human and nonhuman bodies in contemporary French and Francophone media, examining how their physical boundaries are transcended with or without technology. She is currently expanding her research to include Franco-Korean and Japanese media.

Professional and Community Activities

Her book project, “From Méliès to Ducournau: Transhumanist Bodies in French Cinema,” investigates transhumanism in French cinema, a philosophical movement that has long engaged with nonhuman bodies, beginning with the early films of Georges Méliès. Her articles have been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Études Francophones, Early Popular Visual Culture, and Alternative Francophone. Her most recent work on medical humanities, “De Humani Corporis Fabrica (2022): Dissecting the Hospital with the ‘Kino-Eye,’” was published in L’esprit créateur (Johns Hopkins University Press). Currently, she is working on a book chapter on Alain Guiraudie's Misercordia (2024), and a research article on Jean Rouch's Jaguar (1967).
