Career Specialties

Assistant Professor Pina Holway specializes in adolescents and young adults, sexual and reproductive health, health disparities, social demography, and relationships and families.

Professional and Community Activities

Holway's research focuses broadly on topics related to intimate relationships (both romantic and sexual), sexual behavior and reproductive health, and health disparities, as well as the connections between these areas.

Her first line of research is concerned with understanding how and why changes have occurred with respect to (1) intimate relationship experiences and (2) sexual and reproductive health behaviors. Work in this area has been published in Annual Review of Sociology and Journal of Adolescent Health

Her second line of research seeks to (1) identify the social, family background, and demographic factors associated with sexual and reproductive health behaviors and (2) explore the link between sexual and reproductive health behaviors and relationship experiences and health. Work in this area has been published in Journal of Adolescent Health, Archives of Sexual Behavior, International Journal of Sexual Health and Journal of Family Issues

Her third line of research focuses on couples and health. Her work in this area considers the role that romantic partners and spouses play in shaping the health of individuals and has been published in Society and Mental Health, Social Currents and Journal of Aging and Health

Holway currently serves as the chapter representative and faculty advisor of Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honors society.
