Career Specialties

Paul Hillier’s interests are in television studies, American visual culture, and relationships between media, technology and U.S. society. He published articles that explore the history of Reality TV, making connections between P.T. Barnum’s “playful frauds,” Allen Funt’s Candid Camera, Milgram’s “Obedience Study,” Zimbardo’s infamous “Prison Experiment,” Mark Burnett’s Survivor to more recent Reality TV. He’s currently writing about conceptions and representations of social class in the media.

Professional and Community Activities

Prior to joining UT, Hillier taught at the University of Georgia, where he was a 2007 recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award. He also has over a decade of professional experience in information systems.
