Career Specialties

Harper is an assistant professor studying and teaching state government, public opinion, and religion in politics.

Professional and Community Activities

Harper's main research interest is in how state policies affect opinion throughout the US, including in states that have not adopted the policy. Other interests include measuring state ideology over time and identifying legislators responsible for policy diffusion.

Harper has also published on direct democracy, emergency management, elections laws, and Covid policy. His research has been published in journals such as Political Research Quarterly, American Politics Research, and the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion, and Parties.
