Career Specialties

Professor de Lumen’s passion for both art and science has shaped his career as an internationally recognized cinematographer, working across narrative and documentary filmmaking. He specializes in crafting distinctive visual styles tailored to each project, blending cutting-edge technology with bold, innovative artistic approaches.

Before joining the University of Tampa, he shared his expertise and passion for visual storytelling by mentoring emerging filmmakers and teaching in several acclaimed programs, including the InnerCity Filmmakers Program in Los Angeles, Villanova’s On Set Program, and the Villanova Social Justice Documentary Program.

Professional and Community Activities

Professor de Lumen is an award-winning cinematographer whose work has premiered at major international festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival, Berlinale, CamerImage, Tribeca, Tokyo International Film Festival, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His visual storytelling has garnered critical acclaim and recognition across narrative, documentary, and experimental film genres.

Throughout his career, de Lumen has collaborated with a diverse range of clients such as NFL Films, PBS, NOVA, Netflix, YouTube, Virgin Galactic, History Channel, Snapchat, Nike, Adidas, MTV, ABC/Disney, National Geographic, Apple, HBO, Facebook, and E! His commercial and music video work includes projects for Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and A$AP Ferg, and he has also camera operated on major television productions including Grey’s Anatomy.

Professor de Lumen earned his MFA in Cinematography from UCLA, where he studied under legendary cinematographers Roger Deakins and Emmanuel Lubezki. A proud member of the International Cinematographers Guild, he was featured in American Cinematographer for his work on Zona Sur, the Bolivian feature that won Best International Film at Sundance 2009. 

Most recently, he worked closely with John Travolta on his directorial debut on Propeller – One Way Night Coach, a semi-autobiographical period film set in 1962.
