Mexican Politician, UT Alumnus Dies
Juan Camilo Mouriño, a University of Tampa alumnus and advisor to
Mexican President Felipe Calderón, was killed Nov. 4 in a plane crash in
Mexico City.
UT issued the following statement on Mouriño’s passing:
"The University of Tampa community mourns the untimely passing of one of its many outstanding graduates, Juan Camilo Mouriño, class of 1993. Mr. Mouriño had recently been interviewed in The University of Tampa alumni magazine regarding his work as Mexico's secretary of governance, and as such the University community today is especially saddened by this news."
Calderón appointed Mouriño in January 2008 as Mexico’s secretary of governance, a cabinet position.
In an interview in the Spring 2008 issue of the UT Journal, Mouriño credited UT for helping guide him toward his success as a politician.
Prior to his appointment as secretary of governance, Mouriño served as the chief of Calderón’s office. He also helped secure the Mexican president’s victory in the 2006 election, during which he was the campaign’s head coordinator.
Mouriño was born in 1971 in Madrid, Spain. He graduated from UT in 1993 with a degree in economics. His brother, Carlos Mouriño, graduated from UT the same year.
