On Wednesday, Oct. 7, The University of Tampa will welcome The Amicitia Duo, comprised of clarinetists and longtime friends Diane Barger and Denise Gainey. The concert, which is free and open to the public, begins at 4 p.m. in Plant Hall’s Fletcher Lounge, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd.
Formed out of a friendship that spans more than 30 years, the Amicitia Duo brings music for clarinet to a wide variety of audiences. Amicitia, pronounced “ah-mee-KEE-tee-ah,” is the Latin word for friendship. Both university professors — Barger is the Hixson-Lied professor of clarinet at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Gainey is a professor of clarinet at the University of Alabama at Birmingham — the duo combine their love of music and teaching to delight audiences around the world.
The two will be accompanied at the concert by University of Alabama at Birmingham pianist Christopher Steele.
The program for the concert will feature music from the classical era, including Franz Krommer’s Concerto in B-flat Major, Op. 35, through the Romantic period, including Felix Mendelssohn’s Concert Piece No. 2 in D minor, Op. 114 and Amilcare Ponchielli’s Paolo e Virginia, and beyond with pieces by Murcia Bedoya, Michael Kibbe and Gary Schocker.
