Career Specialties

Rose Hilmo is an oceanographer who is drawn to the integrative nature of the field. Her academic specialty is in marine geology/geophysics, which she leverages along with her acoustics expertise to study baleen whales.

Professional and Community Activities

Hilmo's research reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the field of marine science. She uses geophysical instruments to answer biological questions about baleen whales. Her dissertation focused on using ocean bottom seismometers, which are sensors deployed on the seafloor to measure earthquakes, to instead observe blue, fin, and whale calls. Widespread public availability of historical ocean bottom seismometer data has enabled her to continue acoustically investigating baleen whale populations and behavior all over the globe.

Hilmo is committed to undergraduate mentorship in research. Her previous collaborations with undergraduate students in research have resulted in scientific presentations at national conferences.

Honors and Awards
