Accessibility at UTampa

The University of Tampa is committed to providing an accessible and inclusive environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Accessibility is a shared responsibility across the University and supports equal access to educational opportunities, campus services, facilities and digital resources.

Accessibility efforts extend beyond compliance with federal, state and local disability laws. The University continuously evaluates and improves its physical and digital environments to address evolving accessibility needs and create a more inclusive campus experience.

Whether seeking academic accommodations, accessible technology resources, mobility support or guidance on campus accessibility, students can access a variety of services and resources designed to support their educational journey.

WCAG standards are rooted in four main principles

What is WCAG?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG – often pronounced “wuh-cag”) are developed and maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and are widely accepted as the go-to standard for digital accessibility. They serve as the basis of most global accessibility regulations and are applicable across all current and future digital technologies.

Information must be perceivable to people using only one of their senses, so they understand all related content.

End users must be able to interact with all webpage elements. For instance, your website should be easily navigable with just a keyboard or voice controls for non-mouse users.

The principle is just what it seems—end users must be able to understand web page content and functionality information.

Websites must effectively communicate information to all users, including users of assistive technologies and remain compatible with evolving technologies and user needs.

DOJ Timeline

The Justice Department published a landmark final rule in 2024 to strengthen accessibility of web content and mobile applications under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). By requiring that public entities meet a technical standard, the rule will increase people with disabilities’ independence, flexibility, dignity and privacy in their everyday lives.
