UT’s Sykes Chapel Concert Artist Series Continues Nov. 19

On Sunday, Nov. 19, enjoy a delightful afternoon of music by Johann Sebastian Bach as The University of Tampa’s Sykes Chapel Concert Artist Series continues with Four Concertos by J.S. Bach performed by prominent area soloists and chamber orchestra musicians. The concert begins at 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

According to Haig Mardirosian, artistic director for the series, Bach (1685–1750) composed in every idiom of his day with the exception of opera.

The concert will feature four of Bach’s concertos: Sinfonia from the cantata “Non sa che sia dolore,” BWV 209; Violin Concerto in E, BWV 1042; Orchestral Suite (“Overture”) No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067; and Concerto for Two Harpsichords in C Minor, BWV 1060.

“Though often remembered as a composer of towering choral works and an important body of organ and harpsichord music, this concert features Bach at his most inventive, playful and lyrical in these instrumental works in the Italian and French styles,” said Mardirosian. “It is music alive with the brilliance and rhythmic verve of virtuoso string playing and the underlying spirit of the dance.”

Bringing these works to life are soloists Nancy Chang, violin; Barbara Prescott, flute; and Duncan MacMillan and Grigorios Zamparas, harpsichords. The chamber orchestra, conducted by Mardirosian, is comprised of prominent professionals from several of the region’s symphony orchestras.

In addition, throughout the concert Mardirosian will offer commentary on the pieces and the particular attributes of each.

The concert is free, but seating is limited. Doors open 30 minutes before the performance. Parking is available on campus.
