Trombonist and Composer Dave Stamps to Perform, Teach at UT Nov. 25

On Monday, Nov. 25, The University of Tampa will welcome jazz composer and trombonist Dave Stamps to campus to perform and work with the University’s Jazz Ensemble. A concert is set for 7:30 p.m. on the West Verandah of Plant Hall and is free and open to the public.

Stamps is an Othmer Fellow at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he directs the university’s Big Band, teaches jazz history and world music and coordinates the jazz chamber music program all while working on his Doctor of Musical Arts degree. At UT he will perform new arrangements of jazz standards with the Jazz Ensemble, and conduct the band in the world premiere of a piece he has composed for the group.

Earlier in the day, Stamps will give a lecture, “Jazz Composition and Arranging for Beginners,” about how to get started writing music for jazz groups large and small, and teaching students the basics of arranging and orchestrating for a big band. This lecture is intended for music theory students and other UT students who are interested.

Stamps is an active trombonist and composer/arranger and has performed all over the United States, as well as Canada, Mexico, Peru and Europe. Stamps’ compositions have been performed and recorded by university and professional jazz ensembles worldwide.
