“Tomatoland” Author to Speak at UT Feb. 25

Agricultural writer Barry Estabrook and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers will present a program entitled “Tomatoland: Modern Day Slavery in Florida” as part of The University of Tampa Department of English and Writing’s Scholars’ Symposia.

The program will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 5 p.m. in the Grand Salon in Plant Hall on the UT campus.

Barry Estabrook is the author of Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit. Published in 2011, it is described by the author as being “about how industrial agriculture has ruined the tomato in all ways — gastronomic, environmental and in terms of labor abuse.” Estabrook is a former writer for Gourmet magazine.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) is a worker-based human rights organization internationally recognized for its achievements in the fields of corporate social responsibility, community organizing and sustainable food.

The program is free and open to the public. A book signing and Q-and-A session will follow the program.
